Serena Williams d Victoria Azarenka 6-4 6-3
Juan Martin del Potro d Rafael Nadal 7-6(4) 6-4
The 2013 BNP Paribas Showdown returned to Madison Square Garden for the sixth time on March 4. This unforgettable event featured the matchup of World No. 1 Serena Williams versus World No. 2 Victoria Azarenka, with Serena coming out on top 6-4, 6-3. Grand Slam champions Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin Del Potro took to the court following the women in an epic match in which Del Petro walked away the victor 7-6(4), 6-4.
The star-studded matchups were not the only highlight of the 2013 event. During the women’s match, music star Redfoo joined Serena and Vika on court to show off his tennis skills. Ben Stiller hopped on court with Rafael and Juan Martin to get some pointers from the two icons, while his wife Christine Taylor supported the cause from the front row.
The success of the 2013 Showdown in both New York and Hong Kong extended further as it became a part of a global tennis participation effort on the inaugural World Tennis Day. World Tennis Day is an initiative to increase tennis participation around the world. The first World Tennis Day was highlighted by worldwide grassroots opportunities for young players to participate in the sport at the local level. Argentina closed the widest road in the world, 9 de Julio Avenue, to construct 50 tennis courts in order for the local children to play on, while Cambodia held a junior tennis festival which was broadcast on national television.
