Gabriela Sabatini d. Monica Seles 8-5
Grigor Dimitrov d. Roger Federer 6-2 1-6, 7-5
On March 10th, 2015, the BNP Paribas Showdown returned to Madison Square Garden for the 8th consecutive year. In the opening match, women’s tennis legends Monica Seles and Gabriela Sabatini took the court in a re-creation of their season-ending championship final that went five sets 25 years prior. In a match full of exciting points and glimpses of the greatness we saw during their careers, Sabatini took the set 8-5.
The main event featured 17-time Grand Slam winner, Roger Federer, versus the up and coming talent, Grigor Dimitrov. What started as a quick first set with the young Dimitrov coming out firing, turned into a 3-set classic at the Garden. Federer came back in the second, showing the crowd why he’s arguably the best of all time, winning the second set 6-1. The third set included the best, and most competitive tennis of the night, while getting the fans involved as well. Grigor pulled the match out 7-5 in the third to a delighted crowd.
In what was a first at the Showdown, and great fun for the fans, Federer and Dimitrov were interviewed during the match about how it was going and their game plans going forward. Dimitrov also selected a lucky young fan out of the crowd to play a point for him in the beginning of the third set – a point that he won! World Tennis Day continues to grow and increase participation at the grassroots level all over the world with more events and countries participating every year.
